The Look Back

I Piss Excellence!

Top Artists of 2008 (Per my last.fm account)

Since Brendo put together his top albums of 2008 late last week I figured there was still room to discuss lists pertaining to 2008.  I recently checked my last.fm account (thome50, you know for my favorite baseball player when I was 12 and my high school football number. Classy, I know.) and saw that they have changed things up a bit.  I’m not able to easily see my top artists and tracks for the last week, 3 months, 6 months, year and overall.

I’ve been using last.fm and the aggregator since roughly January 2006.  I thought it was an interesting concept and I enjoy keeping track of random things such as the music I am listening to so long as I don’t have to actively do it and that I’m not going to be marketed to with spam for my doing so.  Since that point I’ve made it a necessity to include the background app on all my machines.  Even my ipod gets into the game with all the music “scrobbled” to the site when I dock it.

After the break I dissect what I actually listened to from the 12 and 3 month stand point and what may have caused that as well as why Lonely Island is completely overrated.  (Note: I would say this is 95% accurate as I will rarely listen to a CD in my truck anymore since I got my iPod hook up. On top of that I’m also listening to sports talk radio, judge me all you like, almost exclusively in the truck.)

9. The Airborne Toxic Event – 139

10. Kanye West – 138 (All but three in the last 3 months)

11. Dwight Yoakam – 136

12. Animal Collective – 131 (Over half in the last month)

13. Hercules and Love Affair – 126

14. The Hold Steady – 123 (Surprising since I didn’t listen to the new album as much)

15. Ryan Adams – 119 (Lower than I thought)

3 Months

1. Kanye West – 135 (808’s is a GREAT album)

2. Fleet Foxes – 97

3. Animal Collective – 89 (Ok, so 89 of those 131 came in the last month)

4. Drive-By Truckers – 88

5. Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy – 87

6. Charlie Louvin – 84 (Got the new albums kinda late)

7. Dwight Yoakam – 63

8. Abe Vigoda – 60 (Their new EP is great)

9. Sufjan Stevens – 55 (Christmas music)

9. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit (Awesome LP. Much better than the last)

11. A.C. Newman – 54

12. Jimmy Eat World – 52

13. Okkervil River – 45

13. The National – 45

15. M83 – 43 (Came on late)

Last week (Just for the hell of it)

1. Lucinda Williams – 35 (Downloaded some of her back catalog finally. Great stuff. Also appeared with Charlie Louvin on Saturday.)

2. Ben Folds – 23 (On an old kick hear about his new album)

3. Bat for Lashes – 17 (The new album is interesting though hasn’t grown on me yet)

3. Phosphorescent – 17 (The Willie tribute album is very good)

5. Great Northern – 15 (New album comes out April 28th, definitely pick this one up)

6. Wavves – 14 (Label released his LP early this week after getting so much early buzz. Good job internet!)

7. Handsome Furs – 12 (Eh, not a huge fan but had to hear it all the way through)

7. Dwight Yoakam – 12 (Can’t get enough)

9. No Age – 7 (One of the biggest surprises to me was that No Age wasn’t on the top two lists)

10. The Lonely Island – 4 (I just don’t get this humor. I think SNL is in one of its weakest seasons in a LONG time and these writers are to blame. I’m sorry if “Jizz in my Pants” is too high of humor for me to get.  If only there was a Dane Cook appearance it would be complete.)

11. M83 – 2

11. Okkervil River – 2

11. Port O’Brien – 2

11. Animal Collective – 2

15. Lily Allen – 1 (Eh)

This is likely only really interesting if you are me but that’s what this blog is about so deal with it.
